The BEST Data Available, and I found a truther helping write the #OWS charter

October 31, 2011

Over the weekend this appeared in Ace’s sidebar

The BEST Study Was Baloney, No Warming for the Last 11 Years
One of the BEST co-authors calls bullshit. “Prof Judith Curry, who chairs the Department of Earth and Atmospheric Sciences at America’s prestigious Georgia Institute of Technology, said that Prof Muller’s claim that he has proven global warming sceptics wrong was also a ‘huge mistake’, with no scientific basis.” More at What’s Up With That: “Ross McKittrick unloads: ‘For the Berkeley team to have chosen this particular moment to launch a major international publicity blitz is a highly unethical sabotage of the peer review process.’

The problem is that Dr. Curry is actually standing behind the data and the general interpretation of it –

And finally, this is NOT a new scandal. An important new data set has been released. Some new papers have been posted for comments, which are not surprisingly drawing criticism and controversy. The main issue seems to be Richard Muller’s public statements. All this does not constitute a new scientific scandal in any way.

My continued collaboration on this project will be discussed this week with Muller and Rohde. My joining this group was somewhat unusual, in that I did not know any of these people prior to being invited to join their team (although I very quickly figured out that they were highly reputable scientists). I thought the project was a great idea, and I still do, but it currently has a tarnish on it. Lets see what we can do about this.

Personally I think the PJ Tattler has it right –

The consensus of climate science agrees that global warming is being caused by human emission of CO2. Now, the real answer to that one, frankly, is “So what?” Science isn’t established by consensus, and the number of scientific theories established by consensus that later dissolved under experimentation ranges from Aristotle’s ideas about falling bodies (obviously, heavier objects fall faster, right?) to quasicrystals — which got Danny Schechtmann dismissed as a crackpot 20 years ago and got him the Nobel Prize in Chemistry this year. This is the classical fallacy of argumentum ad populum, and the fact that it has a Latin name tells you how long it’s been recognized as a fallacy. (This is often followed by the argumentum ad baculum, appeal to force: if you keep saying that we’ll beat you up/you won’t get tenure/you should be treated as a war criminal and executed. Those don’t show up very often here at PJM, but don’t doubt I can find you examples, here and elsewhere.)

That’s usually matched with the favorite unscientific “skeptic” answers: No one has proven there’s any such thing as a greenhouse effect and the notion of a global average surface temperature isn’t even well-defined. Both of these really come down to “I don’t believe in thermodynamics at even the most basic level.” “Scientific fact” is different in a very basic way from facts like “2+2=4″, but the basic idea of a greenhouse effect is awfully well confirmed. Among other things, it’s easy enough to calculate that the Earth’s “natural temperature” without the greenhouse effect provided by water, methane, CO2 and other greenhouse gases would be something like -33°C. If you’ve ever seen a lake or an ocean with liquid water, you have experimental confirmation of a greenhouse effect. A slightly more sophisticated version of that is the one about there not having been significant warming in the last 200 or 1000 years; again, sorry. In the 17th and 18th centuries, the Thames river regularly froze over. It has been warming. What we aren’t as sure of is precisely how much. In 200 CE there were wine grapes being grown in northern England, and about 1000 CE bread grains were being grown successfully in Greenland: it is really warmer than it was then? Doesn’t look like it — but that makes trouble for the idea that we’re warming unusually.

This is my opinion only – The question isn’t whether the earth has warmed. It has. The questions are cause, I can see a case for a human contribution but I don’t think that has been proven conclusively, and effect, if we are warming does it matter as much as people like Al Gore are predicting, I don’t think it will. NY may have to build sea walls, we may have more storms, things like that, but by and large we will adapt. Humans shape their environment. That has been true since the first caveman picked up a rock to use as a hammer. In a hundred years the AGW question will be answered. If it is humans causing global warming or client change or whatever changes will be made. If not, well we will build some walls and let the seas rage for awhile and then some more change will happen and people will whine about receding sea levels.

So what does #OWS have to say about this? surprisingly little

[After editing the doc for a while, here’s a suggested order of economic demands:

2. clean up the environment, reverse global warming, create only naturally-based forms of energy (wind, solar, wave, steam). No drilling, nuclear power, oil.

5. free education for all. Use former war expenses and equitable taxation of the rich to develop free public schools, free text books, free higher education. Assure that every student educated in the United States has a guaranteed job or can perform service in some way that recompenses their education. Forgive all current student loans. Cleaning the environment, rebuilding infrastructure, bringing sustainability to world citizens, reversing global warming, etc. can employ all students for many years to come;

Not surprisingly the author seems unaware that aside from some geothermal stations steam power requires burning something for heat to create the steam, or that Nuclear power is steam power that gets its heat from the energy released during radioactive decay. Burning stuff generally releases things like soot and CO2. Nuclear power results in highly compact waste which can be stored safely in places like Yucca Mountain.

A truther in the mist or in their midst. Member of the committee writing or overseeing the writing of The American Peoples New Economic Charter is a 9/11 Truther. As Taco Del Mar would say “Of Course Of Course”

Chris Sarns: I am a retired remodel contractor and 9/11 Truth activist. I bought the Official Conspiracy Theory about OBL and 19 hijackers until i saw a video of World Trade Center building 7 imploding. I have been active in the Truth Movement for 5 1/2 years and a member of the “Architects and Engineers for 9/11 Truth” team for 3 years. We recently produced this documentary on WTC 7. Please take 15 minutes and watch it so you will know the truth about what brought WTC 7 down and why I am here. 9/11 is just the tip of the iceberg and WTC 7 is the mother of all smoking guns. I see it as an entry point to expose the whole rotten mess.
Solving the Mystery of WTC 7

The underlying/root cause of 9/11 and the current crisis is international banker/corporate greed and their control of our government. What you may not know is that the international bankers that created this and all recessions, have also financed both sides in all the wars of the last two centuries.. They get rich coming and going in the boom/bust cycles they create by expanding and then contracting the money supply. They also get very rich by loaning money to governments to finance wars.

Here is a 10 minute primer: [a bit melodramatic but factual]
Why You are a Slave

Here is a long but comprehensive video:
The Money Masters
If we do not focus on this root cause we will just be putting band aids on a melanoma.
