The very definition of insightful political debate –

calling your opponent (and the President) a “raghead”

State Sen. Jake Knotts, who backs Lt. Gov. Andre Bauer in the four-way Republican primary battle, made the remark during an interview on “Pub Politics,” a popular online political talk show in Columbia.

“We already got one raghead in the White House, we don’t need a raghead in the governor’s mansion,” Knotts said, according to multiple people present for the broadcast.

Knotts made the comment after discussing Haley’s Sikh background, said Phil Bailey, one of the show’s hosts and the communications director for the South Carolina Senate Democratic Caucus.

The SC GOP has condemned the remarks and called on Knotts to apologize, like that will help. Video is supposed to be available today.

Apparently the White House has tried to buy off everyone challenging a Dem incumbent

Unresolved questions surrounding Rep. Joe Sestak in Pennsylvania and former state House Speaker Andrew Romanoff in Colorado—and Republican attempts to provide accelerant to the incumbent protection flap—have suddenly forced Senate candidates in a handful of other states, including Arkansas, Illinois and Ohio, to respond to queries about possible White House involvement in their own races, throwing them off-message and on the defensive.

A lot of people think that this is just another example of Rahm Emmanuel and Obama bringing Chicago politics to the White House. I think they are looking at it wrong, I think this is just an attempt to help keep unemployment numbers down, by creating jobs for the challengers they are employed and hopefully, in the White House’s (ha!) mind, the incumbent gets re-elected so they stay employed. No one goes on the unemployment rolls and the White House gets to beef up their jobs saved or created numbers.

Update: As predicted a new Turkish aid flotilla is on it’s way to Gaza. Israel says it will be intercepted. Jake at Curses! Foiled Again! argues that however Israel responds they will be criticized. He is correct. However they had responded the first time they would have been criticized also, but their initial response played directly into what the flotilla organizers wanted and now that makes any response this time that much more problematic. I’m not sure what they can do that won’t result in more problems. I fully expect as stopping of aid to Israel by the US in the next 4 to 6 weeks.

Related, one of the spiritual leaders of the Turkish ruling party is condemning the flotillas as nothing more than provocation. It won’t mean anything, but it’s good to see someone with some sense.

Unfortunately, I’m not sure there was any initial response that could have avoided problems, either. It was really a good set-up by the organizers.
