How to shoot heroin safely – a picture guide for children

January 5, 2010

NEW YORK — Do you want to learn a safer way to shoot heroin? New York City has a guide for that.

The city’s Department of Health and Mental Hygiene spent $32,000 of tax money on 70,000 copies that offer information on how to prepare drugs carefully and care for veins to avoid infection.

The 16-page booklet features seven comics-like illustrations and offers such advice as “Warm your body (jump up and down) to show your veins,” and “Find the vein before you try to inject.”

I can’t speak for anyone else but personally nothing gets me high like taxpayer dollars well spent, and what a better use of those dollars then a cartoon guide to using heroin. For the next project maybe they could do a cartoon guide to cooking meth.

Bring the Heat Bring the Stupid has a pictorial salute to Lucy Lawless.

via Conservative Grapevine25 Girls who never get speeding tickets. Normally I wouldn’t have linked this but three thing made me. 1. The title made me laugh. 2. I think that a lot of the pictures are the same girls in different poses and I want confirmation from other readers. 3. I am feeling a little lazy today.

Dustbury looks at the state of fiction

In any given literary, or sub-literary, genre, the percentage of Good Stuff is, per Sturgeon, around ten; fervid promotion by the Hype Machine won’t change that, but it will draw your attention to the other ninety, much to your dismay. And sooner or later, the next Next Big Thing will be cluttering up the shelves.

I had been noticing this myself. Go to Barnes and Noble and it seems the only thing available anymore is vampire books followed closely by end of the world novels. Where are William Gibson and Neal Stephenson or Sky Lee or even James Frey (his last book was excellent). Somebody please write something with some imagination, a plot, and some decent story telling.

LOL! I followed the link at Dustbury’s and what did I find –

The same goes for some of the new science fiction out there. Far too much of the “based on” stuff… based on a recent movie, based on a popular video game, based on another story based on a movie based on a video game. Where are the new Iain Banks? The new William Gibsons? The new Neal Stephensons? The Kim Newmans? The Neil Gaimans?

so I am not the only one.

Another disturbing trend – All these books retelling Pride and Prejudice from Mr. Darcy’s point of view. There must be 30 of them at least. Soon theere will be nothing in the store except diet books, Mr. Darcy’s revenge books, and Twilight rip-offs.

Newsweek is reporting that there were warnings about bombs hidden in clothing as far back as last fall.

Not good guys.

On the plus side at least they recognized the threat and were discussing how serious it was and how to detect it.

Also, the document discussed which passenger screening techniques and machines might be effective at detecting such bombs depending upon how or where they are concealed.

It doesn’t excuse the failure but it least it shows someone was trying to be a bit proactive.
