September 9, 2009

I have arrived. John thinks all conservatives would like to kill me and Humboldtblue was angry because he thinks Sarah Palin is an idiot.

Good times guys.

I am a pretty conservative guy. I think one of the issues we conservative people face is that religion denounces homosexuality and some conservatives are beholden to there religions.

I think we have to get over the impression of non-acceptance of people based on sexuality. That is a real problem. The bigger issue is how we let the press paint conservatives as a white supremacy group who hate all that are not like us. We can be open to fiscal responsibility, which I admit GWB was not, and still be open to people who are different. I had someone tell me I had to be a racist because I voted for John McCain. Unbelievable. My wife is a foreigner. I asked him how many languages where spoken in his house and told him to be quiet.

I personally do not care if same sex couples get married, just do not force a church that is opposed to it to perform the service. This is an issue that clouded the message of responsibility. If you are going to commit than do it. a 60% divorce rate is atrocious as is a baby boom where 40% of the children do not have a two parent family.

Even many religous conservatives while condeming homosexuality as a sin have expressed their personal well wishes (is that correct) to me. They are worried about my soul but they don’t want to see me dead. There are those of the Fred Phelps camp who would but every conservative I know thinks they are nutcases.

There are plenty of conservatives who are perfectly willing to legislate based on their own personal moral preferences, and it’s not just the more religious sort (smoking bans). We need to work on them, one by one, and try to show them the error (and potential for mischief) of their ways.

Congrats on the hate comments. They’re fun.

Gordon’s right, there are too many conservatives who believe that government should be bent to enforce their prejudices, rather than just butt out. I’m far more libertarian (small l) than “conservative” so that’s not really a problem for me.

David: One of my regular commenters and blog buddies is a very conservative Catholic, who actually supports gay marriage except for the (not implausible) risk that churches would be required to perform the ceremonies. I say “not implausible” because there was that self-employed photographer in New Mexico (IIRC) who was successfully sued because he didn’t want to photograph a lesbian ceremony. THAT part irks me. I think the photographer is wrongheaded, but that’s his own damned business.

Addendum: What I find very remarkable is that so many proponents of gay marriage are willing to be oh-so-POMO about how “all cultures are equal” and tend to side with Islamists against the U.S. because we are the big bad bully who keeps down other cultures and oppresses gays here by refusing to sanction gay marriage in every single state. Unlike those oh-so-progressive Muslim countries that execute gays (and Jews).

In my more charitable moods, I merely point out to these people that in this country we debate whether gays should be allowed to marry. In those countries, they debate the proper method of execution.

In my less charitable moods, I just walk away and fantasize about slapping them upside the head to knock some sense into them. Fortunately, I haven’t yet reached the mood where I ACTUALLY slap them. Maybe soon.

And it must be pointed out that the EVIL VILE DISGUSTING HORRIBLE WARMONGERING HOMOPHOBIC HITLERISTIC SATANIC Dick Cheney is more liberal than President Obama on gay marriage. Funny that.
